The Shift from R Ratings to PTV: Why UK Specification Needs to Evolve

For decades, the UK tile and surface industry has relied heavily on R ratings to determine the slip resistance of materials. However, as technology has evolved and safety standards have become more stringent, PTV (Pendulum Test Value) ratings have emerged as the more accurate and reliable standard for assessing anti-slip performance.

At Aura Surfaces, we believe in staying ahead of the curve and ensuring our clients work with the most up-to-date standards in the industry. So, let’s break down the difference between R ratings and PTV, why the transition matters, and how advances in surface technology have changed the way we approach slip resistance today.

Understanding R Ratings vs. PTV Ratings

For many years, designers and specifiers have relied on the R rating system, which originates from the German DIN 51130 standard. The R scale (R9-R13) is based on testing shod foot slip resistance using an inclined ramp coated in oil. While useful, this system has significant limitations, particularly when applied to real-world conditions.

What Are R Ratings?

The R scale ranges from R9 to R13, where:

  • R9 – Smooth surfaces, minimal slip resistance
  • R10 – Moderate slip resistance, suitable for dry areas
  • R11 – Higher slip resistance, often specified for commercial kitchens or wet areas
  • R12-R13 – High slip resistance, typically found in industrial or heavily wet areas

While this system is still widely used, the R rating does not accurately reflect slip risks in wet or contaminated conditions, nor does it consider barefoot usage, making it unreliable for wetrooms, pools, and public spaces.

What Is PTV and Why Is It More Reliable?

PTV (Pendulum Test Value) is the preferred anti-slip testing method in the UK and follows the BS 7976-2 standard. The test measures friction using a pendulum rubber foot, simulating both shod and barefoot use on dry and wet surfaces.

Unlike R ratings, PTV results account for real-world conditions, making them far more accurate for safety compliance.

PTV Slip Risk Scale

  • 0-24 PTV – High slip risk
  • 25-35 PTV – Moderate slip risk
  • 36+ PTV – Low slip risk (HSE-approved standard)

For reference:

  • A commercial wetroom should have a minimum PTV of 36+ in wet conditions.
  • Public spaces, pools, and changing rooms should aim for PTV 40+.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and UK building regulations strongly favour PTV testing, making it the most reliable indicator of slip safety.

Why the UK Needs to Move Away from R Ratings

Despite PTV being the more accurate and legally recognised standard, many UK designers and specifiers still use R ratings, often leading to incorrect specifications and increased risk.

Key Issues with R Ratings

  1. They Only Test Oil Contamination, Not Water or Other Liquids: The R test method uses an oiled ramp, which does not reflect real-world wet conditions like water, soap, or cleaning solutions.
  2. They Do Not Apply to Barefoot Areas: Since the test uses shoes only, R ratings do not account for swimming pools, spas, and wetroom areas where people walk barefoot.
  3. They Lack Precision: The R scale has broad categories (R9-R13), while PTV measures actual slip resistance values, making it much more accurate.
  4. They Are Not UK Law-Compliant: The HSE and British Standards Institution (BSI) require PTV 36+ for safe surfaces, meaning R ratings alone are not enough for compliance.

How Anti-Slip Surface Technology Has Evolved

Over the last 20 years, surface technology has transformed dramatically, making slip-resistant materials more advanced, safer, and better suited to real-world environments.

  1. Micro-Texture Technology

New manufacturing processes have allowed tiles and stone surfaces to be produced with micro-textures that enhance slip resistance without affecting aesthetics.

Example:
Previously, achieving a high R11 or PTV 36+ meant using visibly rough surfaces. Now, innovative manufacturing techniques embed grip-enhancing particles into smooth, seamless finishes, allowing for elegant, slip-resistant designs.

  1. Advanced Surface Coatings

Modern nano-coatings can now be applied to tiles and natural stone to increase grip levels, improving PTV ratings without altering the appearance. These coatings are widely used in high-end spa resorts, luxury hotels, and premium residential projects.

  1. Evolution of Outdoor & Wetroom Solutions

Manufacturers now produce specific indoor-outdoor tile ranges with matching PTV-rated surfaces. This eliminates discrepancies in aesthetic consistency while ensuring safety for pool surrounds, patios, and exterior walkways.

At Aura Surfaces, we partner with the world’s leading manufacturers to offer cutting-edge anti-slip materials that seamlessly blend safety, durability, and beauty.

At Aura Surfaces, we don’t just follow trends—we lead in responsible, informed specifications. Here’s how we ensure every project is safe, compliant, and visually stunning:

  1. We Use PTV Ratings, Not Just R Ratings: Every slip-resistant product we offer is tested to BS 7976-2 PTV standards to meet UK regulations.
  2. We Provide Expert Guidance: Our team helps designers choose aesthetically pleasing yet compliant solutions, avoiding costly mistakes.
  3. We Offer the Latest Anti-Slip Technologies: From nano-coatings to seamless micro-textures, our materials represent the latest in slip-resistant innovation.
  4. We Educate the Industry: Through our Aura Premium Partnership, we help specifiers stay ahead of changing regulations and technology.

It’s Time for a Change

The UK must move away from outdated R ratings and fully adopt PTV as the primary slip-resistance standard. As safety regulations become stricter and technology continues to evolve, it’s essential that designers, architects, and specifiers embrace PTV testing to ensure compliance, safety, and better project outcomes.

At Aura Surfaces, we are committed to shaping the future of specification. Whether you’re designing a luxury spa, a boutique hotel, or a high-end residential space, we provide the expertise and materials needed to create safe, stunning surfaces.
