Why You Should Support Independent Companies — Especially in Surfaces

This week I want to make the case for something I believe in more than almost anything else in business: you should support independent companies. Not as a warm, fuzzy idea you nod along to and forget — as something urgent. Because the industry I’ve spent my life in is changing fast, and the independents are the ones carrying the quality through it.

I’ll come at this from my world — tiles and surfaces — because it’s the one I know inside out. But it applies just as much to your butcher, your greengrocer and your local coffee shop. Stay with me. This one matters.

The Surface Industry Is Changing Faster Than Ever

Selling tiles and surfaces is not the job it used to be. And I mean that as a warning as much as an observation.

Long gone are the days when you had a choice of four colours in two sizes — a wall tile, and a floor tile to match. Anyone could learn that in an afternoon. Those days are over.

Now you’ve got small format. There’s large format. There are slabs. Add porcelain that behaves like marble and engineered oak that outlives the house it’s laid in, and the options have exploded — multiplying every year, because the technology is moving every year.

And here’s the thing about that. If you don’t know, then you don’t know. Nobody blags their way through a slab specification or guesses their way around a wet-room detail. So the faster the industry moves, the wider the gap gets between the people who’ve kept up and the people still selling four colours in two sizes.

You Can't Buy Real Expertise at £12.45 an Hour

Let me be blunt about the economics, because nobody says this out loud.

You cannot employ someone at twelve, forty-five, fifty an hour and expect them to understand this stuff. It’s not a criticism of that person — it’s just reality. Real knowledge in this industry takes years. It comes from factory visits, and from getting things wrong and learning why.

That kind of knowledge doesn’t sit behind the till at a warehouse operation. The model can’t afford it.

So picture it from your side. You’ve saved, planned, maybe waited years for this project. You walk in ready to spend tens of thousands of pounds of your own money — and the person in front of you hasn’t got a clue. They can point at a shelf and read the price. But they can’t tell you whether it’ll survive the installation, or whether there’s something better for the same money. That’s not a shopping experience. That’s a gamble.

The Butcher, the Greengrocer and the Coffee Shop

This is why I keep coming back to the same handful of examples — because everyone understands them instantly.

Visit your local butcher, and they care about the meat. It’s their name on the door. Walk into the supermarket, and they don’t — it’s been shrink-wrapped, stacked and forgotten.

Your local greengrocer cares about the produce. At the supermarket, it’s been shoved in a bag, bruised, gone half-horrible before it reaches you. And nobody in that building loses a minute of sleep over it.

An independent coffee shop will pour you a better cup than any chain. Every time. Because the people in there probably own it. They probably run it. They care, because they need to — and what’s more, they’re paying their tax into the community they’re part of.

That’s the difference. It isn’t about size. It’s about who cares. And it’s exactly why it pays to support independent companies wherever you can.

What £10,000 Down the Wrong Wall Really Costs

Now bring it back to my world, because in surfaces the stakes are brutal.

Spend ten thousand pounds on the wrong product and stick it down, and you don’t get a refund and a shrug. You get a floor or a wall that’s wrong. It has to come up, and it has to be paid for a second time — in labour, in materials, in the weeks of your life spent living in a building site you thought you’d finished with.

So the cheap route isn’t cheap. It’s the most expensive mistake in the whole project, and you don’t find that out until it’s too late.

The only real insurance against that is expertise. Someone whose side of the table you’re actually on. Someone who’ll tell you no, not that one, here’s why — even when the sale would’ve been easier if they’d kept quiet. And that person is almost always an independent.

Why You Should Support Independent Companies Like Mine

I didn’t build Aura Surfaces to be a shop. I built it to be the opposite of everything I’ve just described.

Twenty-five years in this industry showed me exactly where the gap was. I’d fallen out of love with retail — with selling a single product off a single shelf while clients who clearly needed real guidance got handed a price and pointed at the door. They didn’t need another showroom. They needed a partner, sitting squarely in their corner.

So that’s what Aura Surfaces is. Independent by design. Multi-product, multi-supplier, opinionated about quality, and entirely on the client’s side. I answer to no shelf. If porcelain is right, I’ll say porcelain. If it’s marble, or oak, or terrazzo, or a product from a supplier you’ve never heard of who happens to make the best thing on the market — that’s what you’ll get.

That freedom is the whole point. It’s the thing you can only get from an independent, and the thing the big operations structurally cannot offer you, however nice the showroom looks. It’s also why I keep learning — on a plane to a factory in Italy, in a workshop in Spain — because the day I stop is the day I become the person behind the till who doesn’t know.

How to Support Independent Companies in Practice

So what does this actually look like for you? It’s simpler than it sounds.

Next time it matters — and in surfaces it always matters — choose the independent. Pick the person who knows. Ask them a hard question and see whether the answer has any depth to it. A good independent will happily go deep; they’ve earned the knowledge and they’re proud of it.

Back the butcher over the shrink-wrap. Favour the greengrocer over the bruised bag. Pick the coffee shop over the chain. And when you’re specifying surfaces, choose the consultant who visits the factories over the warehouse that just stacks the boxes.

You’ll feel the difference immediately — in the product, in the advice, and in how the whole thing turns out. And you’ll have kept a bit of expertise, a bit of care and a bit of the good stuff alive in an industry that badly needs all three. If you want to understand the kind of makers this protects, have a read of the brands on our roster — every one of them is an independent chosen for exactly these reasons. The Federation of Small Businesses makes the same argument at a national level, and the numbers back it up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I support independent companies over big retailers?

Because independents carry the expertise. They live and breathe their craft, they put their name on every job, and they’re on your side of the table — not tied to shifting a single product off a shelf.

Are independent surface consultants more expensive?

Rarely, once you count the whole project. Independents stop you making the expensive mistake — the wrong product laid down and paid for twice. Good advice up front almost always saves money overall.

How do I know if an independent really knows their stuff?

Ask a hard, specific question about your project. A genuine expert will go deep, explain the trade-offs, and happily tell you when something isn’t right for you. The depth of the answer is the tell.
